The accident occurred on Monday, February 24, just before 9 p.m. According to witness accounts and initial police findings, the bus suddenly drove into the opposite lane, straight into the path of a Renault van that was traveling correctly. The force of the collision was enormous – the van was completely destroyed, and its driver, a 49-year-old man, died at the scene.
Emergency services immediately rushed to the scene – eight fire brigades, police and ambulance. Firefighters from the Skwierzyna and Przytoczna OSPs were the first to arrive.
– It was a nightmare. The bus was unrecognizable, pieces of sheet metal and glass were scattered all over the road. The bus was in a ditch, and its front looked like it had hit a wall – firefighters reported.
Rescuers immediately attended to the seriously injured bus driver. It was only after he was taken to hospital that the shocking truth came to light. According to the police, the 57-year-old man had 3 per mille of alcohol in his system.
— It's unbelievable. A professional driver, driving a multi-ton vehicle, completely drunk. It's a miracle that the bus was empty and no one else died - say witnesses to the incident.
